Red Rose Box

This is probably one of my favorite projects to date. It’s always satisfying when an idea exceeds our expectations. I’ve been wanting to combine my wood box projects with something dimensional for a while now. The only thing missing was the perfect spark of inspiration. Then I watched a documentary about The British Library. One of their celebrity visitors enjoyed the privilege of seeing an early copy of “A Red, Red Rose”, written by the Scottish poet, Robert Burns, in 1794. This poem also happens to be one of my favorites, and it worked out perfectly, since it has four stanzas.

I’m a firm believer that sometimes simplicity is the best, and as a professional digital typesetter, I have a weakness for fonts. Besides the words you create with them, the right font for the job can take communication to an even deeper level. This beautiful font looks like it’s hand written, making it the perfect choice for a 231-year-old poem. It isn’t just the font that matters here, either. The lid artwork, paper choices and the interior graphic design were all important components of the total project. I also wanted to highlight the box’s dovetail corners. Hence the metallic red that matches the rose.
